Eco-Friendly & Sustainable Maternity Clothing

Are you pregnant and starting to worry about fitting into your current wardrobe? I had that feeling in the beginning, too, but I decided to wait to purchase anything. I’m not particularly eager to buy clothing I will only wear for a short time. I felt there had to be a way to get use out of what I already had and work around my growing belly. I’m happy to say I bought ZERO maternity clothes for my pregnancy. I want to follow this up by saying not all of us can do this, and I don’t want anyone feeling pressure to do so, either. I did not have to go to a job where I had a specific dress code, which helped me a lot! I was able to wear whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. Also, I’m 5’2’’, gained about 20ish pounds when pregnant, and carried Elliott a few weeks short of 40. I never felt uncomfortable or too big for what I already had, so I could work with it. We all have different bodies and comforts, so I will share with you my tips you could hopefully use for most of your pregnancy, if not all, and then list some options of where to purchase maternity clothing - both secondhand and new!

Update: I recently had my second pregnancy and gave birth to a baby girl on June 1st, 2023. I was able to go through the entire pregnancy without buying any maternity clothing. Despite gaining twice the amount of weight, I managed to work with what I had in my closet, mainly relying on flowy dresses and stretchy pants once again :D

How to Wear Regular Clothes as Maternity Clothing: Tips For Your Current Closet

  • Leggings: These were my go-to almost every day. I would go to Pure Barre in the mornings and stay in my leggings the rest of the day. No matter how big I got, the waistbands would always remain comfortably below the tummy.

  • Flow-y Garments: I had a lot of tunics and oversized tees, which had a lot of room in them. Many of my sundresses had lots of space, as well!

  • Stretch, Jersey Fabrics: When I wanted to dress up, I would turn to jersey fabrics because they would easily stretch - even at the end of the 3rd trimester!

sustainable-maternity-clothing

I considered buying only a few things at first, but I'm glad I didn't because I learned to work with a small wardrobe. Outfit repeating becomes the norm when you're pregnant - well, it should be in general, but it's definitely easier to do when you don't fit into as much as you used to! I think you'd be surprised to see how much you can still fit into - so my advice is to spend some time in your closet first and wait until you really need to purchase a maternity piece.

Secondhand Maternity Clothing

My first recommendation would be to consult your friends who are mothers! They may still have some maternity clothes in their closet that they no longer use. Most people are happy to part with items they no longer need.

Check out your local thrift and secondhand stores to start with, but if you have no luck, we suggest checking these places out: Used Clothing Apps

Ethically-Made New Maternity Clothing

Okay, so if your current closet doesn't have enough, and secondhand isn't cutting it - or you want to spoil yourself... I get it - pregnancy is exciting, and you should be able to treat yourself! Fortunately, there are some brands that are creating sustainable maternity clothing, and there are a lot of cute pieces.

MARION

This high-end maternity office wear brand helps mamas keep looking great at work during pregnancy & nursing. Their chic, versatile designs allow mamas to re-wear core pieces again and again. They offer standard & petite sizing, with some extended size options. MARION's designs are made with luxury sustainable fabrics like TENCEL, organic cotton, and recycled nylon. Most styles include invisible nursing access, so breastfeeding mamas don't need to buy twice. Designs are also made to look like "regular" clothes after pregnancy (really!), making each piece a long-term wardrobe investment. In addition to workwear, MARION carries a line of sustainable maternity basics.

Warp + Weft

This brand is quickly becoming one of my favorites. They offer plus size options (00-24), and their jeans are priced under $100.

They even have super cute overalls for pregnancy!

Pact

This is one of my favorite organic cotton brands, and their prices are more affordable than most. Everything they make is very comfortable and washes well.

Girlfriend

Another size-inclusive, sustainable brand, Girlfriend has a collection of maternity leggings, bike shorts, and nursing bras. Everything is made from recycled plastic bottles, and they go up to size 6XL.

Frugi

This is a UK childrenswear brand that has a small section for maternity. Frugi is one to check out if you love color and bold prints! They use GOTS-certified organic cotton for their designs.

Cosabella

Created 35 years ago by an Italian couple, Cosabella sells feminine lingerie, pajamas and loungewear. Find maternity underwear, camis, bras, pjs and more.

Postpartum Underwear

for after baby, you will love these!

Proof’s Postpartum Underwear has a super absorbent core, controls postpartum bleeding, has front-to-back protection & fights odor. Find different absorbency levels, colors, and styles.

Of An Origin

This brand offers a great minimalist capsule wardrobe for your entire pregnancy, postpartum, and even beyond.

Their tops, pants, and wraps are not only super practical for maternity and nursing, but they’re also timeless and can be styled in several different ways. Their feeding and pumping shirts, wraps, and cardigans don’t even look like nursing-wear!

Their clothing is Fair Trade and most of it is currently made out of natural cotton (they have some GOTS certified organic cotton styles coming!). They currently offer sizes Xs-XL and are working to expand their sizing options in the near future as well.

Whatever route you choose for your maternity wardrobe, I wish you a safe and healthy pregnancy. Your wardrobe should not add to the stress. I hope you find these tips helpful, and please feel free to share your own in the comments below.

Lots of love from one mama to another,

Natalie

The Best Sustainable Kids Swimwear

Whenever you go to the beach, there are a few specific things you need to bring to make your trip fun and unforgettable. One of the most important things you should not forget to pack in your suitcase is your swimsuit.

Whether you enjoy swimming in the ocean or the pool or simply prefer relaxing on your beach towel, swimwear is absolutely essential to have.

Sometimes, it can be tricky to find a good-quality swimsuit. But as an adult, once you have found one or two you like, you can usually enjoy them for a while. For kids’ swimwear, it is a little different as children grow so quickly! You have to buy new swim shorts or bikini sets for your kids a lot more regularly!

Plus, as an eco-conscious parent, you might want to purchase swimsuits that will not harm the planet. This can be difficult because they are all made of synthetic materials, and we know how bad plastic is for our environment.

So if you are looking for new eco-friendly swimwear for your children this year, this article is for you! We have selected 9 brands selling sustainable kids’ swimsuits so that you and your family can create happy memories on your next trip to the beach!

What Makes Bathing Suits Sustainable?

When we see kids’ swimsuits costing as little as a few dollars at the store, we can easily be tempted to go for the cheap option. However, with such a low price tag, swimwear cannot be made to last or produced under ethical conditions.

So try to avoid fast fashion brands as much as possible, and support an ethical company that pays its workers a fair wage, treats them well and provides them with healthy, safe working conditions. Remember that when something is too cheap, someone in the supply chain is paying the price.

You also don’t want your child to lose his/her swimsuit while having fun with friends. So investing in quality is the way to go to make sure the piece will last.

Finally, try to support brands that have taken steps to minimize their environmental footprint, and choose swimwear made from eco-friendly materials.

What Eco-Friendly Materials Should You Search For?

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to avoid synthetic materials when buying swimsuits as they have to be stretchy. Natural fabrics would also not last long if used in salt water or chlorine-filled swimming pools.

Thankfully, there are sustainable alternatives to polyester and nylon, which are what most swimsuits on the market are made of. For instance, recycled polyester and recycled nylon, produced from plastic water bottles or nylon fishing nets, are great options!

Buying swimwear made with these materials helps divert plastic waste from landfills and oceans and encourages manufacturers to stop using virgin petroleum-based materials to create new products.

The Best Organic & Sustainable Baby Clothes

Welcome to our guide to sustainable baby clothes! In this article, we will show you how to dress your little one in style while also making a positive impact on the planet. As concerns about the environmental impact of fast fashion and the textile industry continue to rise, more and more parents are opting for sustainable clothing options for their babies. There are a variety of eco-friendly materials available, from organic cotton onesies to bamboo sleep sacks. Not only are these materials gentle on your baby's delicate skin, but they are also sustainable for the planet. Additionally, these clothes are made from natural and non-toxic materials, and are produced in an ethical and environmentally responsible manner.

Why Should You Buy Sustainable Baby Clothes?

When dressing your baby, it's important to take into account the environmental impact of their clothing. Conventional baby clothes are frequently made from synthetic materials that are detrimental to the environment. These materials, including polyester and nylon, are derived from fossil fuels and take hundreds of years to decompose. Moreover, the manufacturing of these materials emits harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

Sustainable baby clothes are made of natural and non-toxic materials that are gentle on your baby's delicate skin. Organic cotton, bamboo, and Tencel are some popular eco-friendly options for baby clothes. These materials are grown without harmful pesticides and require less water and energy during production. By choosing sustainable baby clothes, you can minimize your baby's exposure to harmful chemicals while also contributing towards a healthier and cleaner environment.

What is Wrong with Conventional Baby Clothes?

The fashion industry is one of the most polluting sectors in the world. Conventional baby clothing is usually mass-produced with the help of cheap labor and harmful manufacturing processes. Synthetic materials like polyester and nylon require substantial amounts of energy and water, leading to water pollution and the depletion of natural resources. These cheaply made baby clothes contribute to waste and pollution due to their short lifespan. They will end up in landfills, where they occupy valuable space and release harmful chemicals as they decompose.

Although babies outgrow their clothes quickly, we still hope that these garments will be in good enough condition to be passed down to another baby. Unfortunately, this can be a challenge with most brands available today due to their poor quality.

Shopping Sustainable Baby Clothes on a budget

Sustainable baby clothes can be affordable without breaking the bank.

First, consider buying second-hand. Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online marketplaces often have gently used baby clothes at a fraction of the original price. You can find high-quality, sustainable brands at significantly lower costs. Some of the brands mentioned below have pre-loved shops where previous customers have given back their baby’s clothes to resell online.

Second, take advantage of sales and discounts. Many ethical and sustainable baby clothing brands offer seasonal sales and promotions. Sign up for their newsletters or follow them on social media to stay updated on the latest deals.

Third, opt for baby clothing rental services. This is a great way to save money and continue circulating sustainable brands to more families. We have listed a couple in this post!

Finally, consider organizing clothing swaps with other parents. This allows you to exchange clothes that your baby has outgrown for ones that fit them now. It's a cost-effective and sustainable way to refresh your baby's wardrobe without spending any money.

7 Tips for Hosting an Eco-Friendly Baby Shower That's Good for the Earth and Your Little One! (2024)

A Guide to Sustainable & Eco-Friendly Baby Showers

Awaiting the arrival of your new bundle of joy is a magical time for parents, filled with excitement and anticipation. But, if you’re considering planning a baby shower to celebrate you as soon-to-be-parents, you might wonder if it’s possible to make this a sustainable event. The good news is there are countless ways to ensure a sustainable baby shower is everything you want it to be for both mother-to-be and Mother Nature.

From the invitations to the decorations, so many elements of your baby shower can be made sustainable with just a bit of planning and some eco-alternatives. As more people have become aware of the environmental impacts of events like baby showers, the market for sustainable party supplies has grown to keep up with demand. You’ll now find great alternatives and sustainable solutions to help you plan a party you can be proud of, and that will inspire your guests to take notes for their future events!

Why make your baby shower sustainable?

Baby showers are now big business, with the average cost of hosting one anywhere between $100 and $1000. Unfortunately, along with the cost, a lot of waste happens from celebratory events, including baby showers. From food waste and single-use plastics to non-biodegradable confetti and unwanted party favors, many elements of a baby shower can be unsustainable and wasteful.

As with all events, you'll want to make this day memorable and enjoyable for you and your guests, but you'll feel even better if you know you've done your bit for the planet simultaneously. It can seem daunting to plan a sustainable event, often with many factors to consider. But don't worry; we've come up with a list of top tips to help you plan the perfect baby shower and keep things as eco-friendly as possible!

our top tips for hosting an eco-friendly baby shower:

1. Eco-friendly invitations

One of the ways you can start off on the right foot with your sustainable shower planning is to think about the invitations you'll be making for the event. While it's common to have printed invitations sent out for a baby shower, unless you're family or close friends, these usually get thrown away. And unless the invites are fully recyclable (and your guests actually do recycle!), they will likely end up in landfill.

Why not opt for digital invites rather than printed ones? These can be found for free online, or you could design your own with free tools like Canva and then email them out. You can even use online evite sites that allow you to track invite responses, dietary requirements, and more - making your life even easier.

If you do go for print, try to use FSC-certified paper or recycled paper, and avoid foiled lettering or glitter, as these make the invites unrecyclable. You could even get invitations made on wildflower seed paper and encourage your guests to plant their invitations after the event. We have a post - here - that offers you some wonderful options.

2. Sustainable food and beverage options

If you're providing food and drink at the baby shower, there are several ways you can choose more sustainable options. If you're using a caterer, search for one who uses organic, locally sourced produce and provides the food in zero-waste packaging.

Whenever possible, choose locally sourced and organic food and beverages. Locally sourced produce reduces carbon emissions associated with long-distance transportation, while organic options support sustainable farming practices and avoid harmful pesticides.

Plan the menu around seasonal ingredients. Seasonal produce is often fresher, tastier, and more affordable. It also helps reduce your event's environmental impact by minimizing the need for energy-intensive storage and transportation.

Also consider opting for a plant-based menu to satisfy most dietary requirements and reduce your carbon footprint (maybe you can find some inspiration from some of our favorite vegan food bloggers). Make sure the plates, cutlery and cups you get are reusable too! You could even rent the things you need from a party rental company. They provide everything from tableware and linen to chairs and tables.

If you still need to opt for a few disposable items, we suggest checking out Repurpose for those! They have a lot of compostable options for cutlery, bowls, plates, cups and drinkware.

To minimize food waste, estimate the number of guests accurately. Consider serving food in smaller portions or offering a buffet-style meal where guests can choose what they want. Encourage guests to bring their reusable containers to take home any leftovers.

3. Eco-friendly decorations

First and foremost, go plastic-free! This will reduce the amount of single-use items you have at the baby shower and allow you to reuse the decorations again. Decorations are often available to rent too, which could be perfect for any big decorations you had in mind. You can also ask your family and friends if they have anything you can borrow from their past celebrations.

To tie in with the eco-friendly theme of the shower, use natural elements to decorate the space to really connect people to nature and create a calm, peaceful atmosphere. Potted plants make great centerpieces, and small trees could help fill any space you have.

Consider taking the party outside if you can, as beautiful natural landscapes make the best decorations for a party. What could be better than being surrounded by tall trees or hearing the sound of the ocean at your baby shower?

4. Games and activities with an environmental twist

We've all been to a baby shower that had loads of games with printed bingo cards, pens, paint, and even cheap onesies. Unfortunately, what doesn't get thrown in the trash usually gets forgotten or donated a few months later. Instead, think of games or activities that don't involve anything you won't use again.

Guess the baby is a popular game that can be easily made more eco-friendly. Simply ask your guests to bring along a photo of themselves as a baby and use wooden pegs on a line to hang them up - then record everyone's guesses digitally on your phone or tablet.

Another fun activity (not necessarily a game) would be to plant a tree. Set up a station where guests can contribute to planting a tree to honor the new baby. This activity not only encourages sustainability but also creates a lasting memory for the parents and their child.

5. Eco-friendly party favors for guests

It can be hard to come up with party favors to give to your guests that they will all want, especially when sticking to a budget. However, things like mini beeswax candles, homemade soaps and bath salts are usually crowd pleasers and can be pretty cheap if you can make them yourself or get them from a thrift store (psst..you can find lots of ribbon there).

You can also give your guests the gift of greenery by offering seed packets as party favors. Choose seeds of plants or flowers that are native to your region or support local wildlife. Encourage your guests to plant and watch them grow as a reminder of the baby shower. Another great idea would be to prepare homemade treats such as cookies, jams, or granola bars using organic and locally sourced ingredients. Package them in reusable glass jars or fabric bags, and attach a personalized note expressing your gratitude. This not only reduces waste but also shows your guests how much you value their presence.

You could even tie the party favors into the games or activities of your baby shower. For example, have people decorate mini potted succulents to take home with them or make their own candles or soap at an activity station during the baby shower.

By opting for eco-friendly party favors, you not only reduce waste but also inspire your guests to make sustainable choices in their everyday lives.

6. Sustainable gifts

If your guests are keen to offer gifts at your shower, think about what you really need for the new baby. Unwanted or duplicate gifts can be an annoyance and even wasteful. Why not set up a sustainable gift registry and let people know they can select something from the list?

Struggling to come up with gift ideas? Check out our list of the best sustainable baby giftseco-friendly baby clothes brands, and don't forget our guide to creating a sustainable baby registry.

Not interested in gifts? Why not ask for donations to a local animal sanctuary or environmental charity you support?

7. The outfit

Don't forget about your outfit for the big day! You've been planning this party for weeks, so you'll want a special ensemble to feel good in on the day. But this doesn't have to mean going out and buying a brand new item of clothing! For the mom-to-be, if you don't have a maternity dress that will work for the event, why not rent one? There are loads of maternity wear rental websites that have dresses, skirts or jumpsuits to wear for your baby shower. Try Motherhood Rental or Rent The Runway Maternity for some inspiration! You could also find something second-hand or vintage that is often cheaper than buying brand new. You may even already have a flowy dress in your closet that has just the right amount of room for your growing belly :)

Conclusion: Celebrating the arrival of your little one while being kind to the planet

Hosting an eco-friendly baby shower doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. By following these seven tips, you can create a memorable and sustainable event that will positively impact the Earth and your little one.

From choosing eco-friendly games and activities to providing sustainable party favors, there are many ways to incorporate sustainability into every aspect of your baby shower. You can reduce waste and promote a green lifestyle by making conscious choices, such as using recycled materials, serving organic food, and opting for digital invitations.

Remember, the baby shower is not just about celebrating the new arrival but also about shaping a better future for them. By hosting an eco-friendly baby shower, you teach your little one the importance of caring for the environment and making sustainable choices from the beginning.

So, gather your loved ones, embrace the beauty of nature, and celebrate the joyous occasion while leaving a minimal environmental footprint. Let's raise our glasses to a greener and brighter future for your little one and the planet!

The Best Organic Cotton Clothes

With warmer days on the way, it’s time for light layers and summer dresses again! If you’re searching for a new piece for your wardrobe, but you want to shop sustainably, it’s important to avoid certain materials that are bad for the planet.

One such material is cotton; while one of the most widely used textiles in the fashion industry, popular for its breathability and versatility, it’s also one of the most environmentally damaging.

Is Cotton Sustainable?

Cotton farming is incredibly water-intensive, taking 2,700L of water to make just one conventional cotton t-shirt – that’s about three years’ worth of drinking water! Cotton is also the most pesticide-dependent crop in the world, using chemicals that pollute waterways and ecosystems and poison the farmers who grow the crops.

Why You Should Choose Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is a better alternative to cotton as it’s produced and certified to organic agricultural standards. Its production sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people by using natural processes rather than artificial inputs. Most importantly, organic cotton farming doesn’t allow the use of toxic chemicals or GMOs (genetically modified organisms).

Switching to organic cotton can save up to 91% of the water needed to grow the crops, 46% fewer greenhouse gases, and gives farmers more control as they don’t rely on buying expensive genetically modified seeds from a handful of big companies. Currently, only around 1% of all cotton produced is organic, so we need more people to ditch traditional cotton and opt for the more sustainable option of organic cotton. To be sure that what you’re buying is actually organic, look out for certifications like the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the Organic Content Standard Certification (OCS).
